Shapewear, Bodysuit, or Waist Trainer — What’s the Difference and Which One Should You Source?
One of the most common questions we hear is: “I want to make shapewear, but I’m not sure which category.” Shapewear, bodysuits, and waist trainers are often used interchangeably, but they’re different products for different customers. This guide breaks down the differences so you know exactly what to ask for when you inquire.
What Is Shapewear
Shapewear is the broad category — any garment designed to smooth and contour the body through elastic compression. It’s the umbrella term that covers most shaping undergarments.
Products that fall under shapewear:
- Shapewear bodysuit — full-torso shaping in one piece
- Control panties — targeted hip and tummy control
- Shapewear dress — shaping slip worn under clothing
- Shapewear tops — upper body smoothing
- Fajas Colombianas — high-compression Colombian shapewear
Core material: Seamless knit, nylon + spandex blends.
Best for: Customers who want everyday shaping without obvious restriction. Comfort-first buyers.
What Is a Bodysuit (and How It Differs from Shapewear)
This is where most confusion happens. A bodysuit is a subcategory of shapewear, but not all bodysuits have shaping function. Some are simply seamless tops worn as base layers.
Nanbin produces two types of bodysuits:
- Shapewear bodysuit — has compression panels or knit tension designed to shape
- Seamless bodysuit — smooth, stretchy base layer without targeted compression
How to decide:
- Your customer wants shaping → Shapewear bodysuit
- Your customer wants a smooth base layer → Seamless bodysuit
What Is a Waist Trainer
A waist trainer is different from shapewear. It targets the waist specifically, using sustained compression to create a narrower waistline over time. It’s less “underwear” and more “shaping tool.”
Two main types:
| Type | Material | Key characteristic |
|---|---|---|
| Latex waist trainer | Latex rubber | High heat retention, noticeable shaping feel, more compression |
| Neoprene waist trainer | Neoprene | Thermal effect, often worn during workouts |
Best for: Customers with a clear waist-slimming goal who are willing to wear a restrictive garment. Common use cases: workouts, postpartum recovery, stage wear.
Key difference from shapewear: A waist trainer only covers the waist area. Shapewear covers the full torso, upper body, or lower body as a system.
What About Fajas Colombianas
Fajas are a subcategory of shapewear with a distinct origin and higher compression. They originated from Colombian shaping garment techniques and are known for stronger compression than standard shapewear.
Best for: Post-surgical recovery, postpartum shaping, and customers who want noticeably firmer compression.
