Shapewear Tops and Shorts: When Buyers Choose Separates Over Bodysuits

Not every brand needs a full bodysuit. We offer shapewear tops and shorts as separate pieces, so clients can mix and match based on their target market and product positioning.

Shapewear Tops: Cover the waist and chest area in a one-piece top. Designed for upper body shaping.

Shapewear Shorts: Cover the hips and thighs. Designed for lower body shaping.

Bodysuits: Full-body coverage from bust to hips in one piece.

Each format suits different use cases and customer needs. Here’s how to decide.

What Are Shapewear Tops and Shorts

Shapewear tops focus on the waist and midsection. Some styles extend to the chest with built-in cups or support structures. Nanbin makes high-waisted tops, tank-style tops, and options with or without bust support — all designed to be worn alone or layered under clothing.

Shapewear shorts target the hips, buttocks, and upper thighs. The main demands are shaping the waist, lifting the glutes, and smoothing the thighs. Common styles include high-waisted tummy-control shorts and butt-lift shorts.

Why some clients choose separates over bodysuits: easier to put on and take off, flexible styling (tops with any bottom, shorts with any top), and adaptability to seasons (shorts with crop tops in summer, high-waisted tops with pants in winter).

When Buyers Choose Tops Over Bodysuits

We see clients choose tops instead of bodysuits in these situations:

  • Only need upper body shaping — The target is waist slimming or bust/armpit area smoothing, with no lower body coverage needed. A top is more targeted and cost-effective
  • Styling freedom — A top pairs with any pants or skirt. Clients don’t want a bodysuit limiting their bottom options
  • Layering under shirts or T-shirts — For workwear, tops create a smoother silhouette than bodysuits, which can wrinkle at the waistline or interfere with pant waistbands
  • Postpartum or nursing needs — Separates allow individual adjustment. Only replace the piece that needs changing, not the entire garment

When Buyers Choose Shorts Over Bodysuits

Shorts are a better fit than bodysuits in these scenarios:

  • Only need lower body shaping — Lifting the glutes and smoothing the thighs. If the upper body doesn’t need compression, shorts alone do the job
  • Summer wear with skirts or shorts — Bodysuits can be visible or feel too warm in summer. Shorts pair naturally with crop tops or tank tops
  • High-waisted shorts paired with crop tops — This combination has become a fashion staple on its own. The shorts shape the waist and lift the glutes while the crop top leaves the midsection bare — it doesn’t look like shapewear at all

FAQ

Do most of your clients carry tops, shorts, or bodysuits?

All three. Our clients choose product combinations based on their target market. Some brands specialize in shorts only, some do top + short sets, and others go all-in on bodysuits. If you have a specific direction, inquire and we’ll discuss which combination fits your market best.

Can shorts be worn alone, or do they need to be paired with other products?

Shorts can be worn on their own. Many DTC brands build their entire line around shorts, paired with active tops or casual wear. Shorts are a standalone category with their own demand.

Can a brand launch with shorts only and skip bodysuits?

Yes. Shorts are a mature standalone category with consistent demand, from fitness shorts to butt-lift shapewear. You don’t need a full product range to establish a brand.

Are separates as customizable as bodysuits?

Yes. The same fabric options, construction methods, and custom development process apply to both separates and bodysuits. There is no reduction in options for going the separates route.
