Private Label vs Full Custom: What Changes at Each Level

Not every product needs full custom development. Nanbin offers three levels of customization so brands can choose what matches their current stage, budget, and timeline.

Here is how each level works and what changes as you move from white label to full custom.

Three Levels of Customization at Nanbin

LevelWhat it meansBest for clients who
White LabelSelect from our existing styles, add your brand logoWant to launch fast with minimal commitment
ODM (Modified Design)Start with an existing style, modify detailsHave market feedback and want to differentiate
Full Custom (OEM)Develop a product from scratch to your exact specificationsNeed full control over design, fabric, and branding

Each level changes the following: how much input you provide, how long development takes, what sample process applies, and what order volume is needed.

White label is the fastest path to market. You choose from our existing product styles and we apply your brand logo.

What you provide: Your style selection and logo file (AI, EPS, or high-resolution PNG).

What we do: We produce the selected style with your logo applied. We handle production, logo application, and packaging according to your instructions.

Sample process: Stock samples are available from current production inventory. No custom development is needed. For details on sample preparation, see our guide on what to prepare before requesting a sample.

MOQ: See our waist trainer private label guide for current minimum order quantities.

Timeline: This is the fastest option. Stock samples ship within days, and bulk production runs on the standard schedule. Confirm current lead times at inquiry.

Best for: Clients who are testing a new market, launching a minimum viable product, or want to establish a brand presence before committing to custom development.

Level 2 — ODM (Modified Design)

ODM starts with an existing Nanbin style and modifies it to your specifications. Common modifications include color changes, fabric grade adjustments, sizing chart changes, or detail alterations.

What you provide: Reference images or descriptions of the modifications you want. A tech pack is helpful but not required at this level.

What we do: We review your modification request, develop a revised sample based on your adjustments, and move to production after your approval.

Sample process: Because the design changes from our standard, a new sample is required. Custom samples typically complete within 7 days. One free revision is included per sample.

Compared to white label: This level adds a sampling stage, requires higher MOQ, and extends the timeline. In return, you get a product that is distinct from stock styles and better aligned with your brand identity.

Best for: Clients who have validated their market with a white label product and now want to differentiate, or clients who need specific adjustments to fit their target audience.

Level 3 — Full Custom (OEM)

Full custom is the highest level of control. We develop a product from scratch based on your design specifications, tech pack, or reference sample.

What you provide: A complete tech pack including measurements, materials specification, construction details, and packaging requirements. If you do not have a tech pack, you can send a reference sample for us to replicate and adapt.

What we do: We develop patterns, source custom materials, produce prototypes, and refine through multiple sampling rounds until the product matches your specifications.

Sample process: Full custom development requires multiple sample rounds — initial prototype, fit adjustment, and final approval. Each round includes one free revision.

Compared to ODM: Full custom requires a tech pack or reference sample, involves the longest development timeline, and has the highest MOQ. The client participates deeply in every decision — fabric selection, trim sourcing, compression level, stitching specifications, and packaging design.

MOQ: For full custom projects, MOQ depends on fabric sourcing, production complexity, and whether the fabric needs to be custom-ordered. Our waist trainer private label guide covers typical MOQ ranges.

Best for: Clients with established brand presence who need a proprietary product, or clients who have specific technical requirements that stock styles cannot meet.

How to Choose the Right Level

We recommend choosing based on your current business stage and product goals:

New to shapewear, want to test fast: Start with white label. You can validate demand with minimal commitment and upgrade later.

Have sales data, want to compete on differentiation: Move to ODM. Modify colors, details, or sizing to make the product yours.

Have an established brand, need full control: Go full custom. Develop a proprietary product that no competitor can copy from stock.

One advantage of working with Nanbin is that you can progress through all three levels as your brand grows. Many of our clients start with white label, switch to ODM after proving their product-market fit, and eventually move to full custom for their hero products.

FAQ

Can I start with white label and move to full custom later?
Yes. Many clients begin with white label to establish their brand, then upgrade to higher customization levels as their business grows. Each level builds on the previous one.

Does ODM require a tech pack?
A tech pack is recommended but not required for ODM. Reference images and modification descriptions are sufficient. For full custom, a tech pack or reference sample is needed.

Is full custom more expensive than private label?
Full custom involves longer development, higher MOQ, and more sampling rounds. The total cost per unit depends on material choices and complexity. Confirm pricing at inquiry.

Which level gives me the most control over the product?
Full custom (OEM) gives you complete control over every aspect — from fabric and construction to packaging and branding.

Can I combine multiple levels across different products?
Yes. You can run white label for one product line and full custom for another. We handle each product independently.
